About Onie

Onie Burge is the chef and founder of Alchemy. Raised in Oakland, Onie has lived in New York City, France, Spain, and Germany. After studying comparative religion in college, Onie went on to work as an apprentice cook in a number of restaurants in northern France.

Back in the Bay area a couple of years as a line cook lead to a year at the Culinary Institute of America's Baking and Pastry Program. Another couple of years of restaurant work on the sweet side and Onie started Alchemy in 2000.

Living in Europe gave Onie a taste for beautiful, local, seasonal food. She has been inspired by the jewelry of French Art Nouveau jeweler Rene Lalique as well as that of Russian Imperial Court jeweler Peter Paul Fabergé.

Growing up in the bountiful and diverse San Francisco Bay Area opened the door for Onie to create her own Alchemy. Whenever possible Onie uses local organic products of the highest quality. She buys her chocolate from slavery-free sources. Onie now makes her home in San Francisco.
